Mommy Panel what were you like before kids?

On grandmas night stand when she passed was this note...

Looking back, what were you like before kids?  That is our mommy panel question for the week.

As I read that out loud Megan blurted out SKINNY!  “Gee Megan thanks. Are you calling me fat?”   I don’t think that was what she meant with this question but yes, I am a few pounds heavier.   I was pregnant at 17, married 3 months after my 18th birthday and became a mom 46 days later.  The divorce was final in 2006 11 years and 11 months after the marriage began.

How do I answer this question in a short enough paragraph to add it to the link up? I was a child when I became a wife and a mom. Through the years I have matured.  I grew away from things that I once liked because the love of my children was stronger.  I was never told that I could go to college and make something of myself as a kid. It was always told to me that we did not have the money for college. I took the test to join the ARMY, was talking to a recruiter…

I had a baby instead. I wanted to go places, see things and jump out of planes. I thought of joining the Peace Corps. I tried at college a few times as an adult and was never able to finish due to daycare issues. After having 3 kids I found a program where I could have joined the Red Cross. They would have provided training also. I would have had to move with my kids out of town.

My life would have gone a totally different direction and I am glad that I made the choice to stay. I am a compassionate person who has sometimes found the best in the worst which has gotten me in trouble at times.  On my grandmas nightstand when she passed was a piece of paper she wrote the popular saying “life is not measured by the breaths we take but the moments that take our breath away.”   While some measure their success by income, Job, status and the kind of car they drive they have nothing to leave behind that will not rust. When you leave your 40 grand a year job you can be replaced. I did not put my life on hold to raise my children nor did I give up things for them that will really be missed in the end. Life simply changed and gave me something that will last through eternity.    As the pastor said at grandma’s funeral you write your own obituary while you live. Grandma was a Veterans Nurse and Mentor. Her life will live on in the things she taught me and others with her compassion and understanding. God choose her to be a mother of many though none biological. The lesson I have learned through out 17 years of raising babies is that the choices I make as a parent are being watched and modeled. It is my responsibility to do things that when modeled will help my children be a benefit to society.  I was not always the best role model and still continue to make improvements.

dry erase craft for spelling list word wall words

2nd Grade  word wall words

I laminated this spelling list for all of Zane's 1st  and  2nd  trimester spelling words. Each week we test him on the words for the week. This week he is having a test on all of the words. We mark them off when he gets them right and check the ones that he either missed or I felt he needed more work on. Using a dry erase marker you can erase and reuse this. My favorite gift from my husband aside from those sentimental gifts like my diamond ring and Opal necklace was this machine  for laminating my owns stuff.  If you do not have a lamination machine. Most people don't want such odd items for a birthday. Right? Just use the plastic sleeves for binders. They worked great,  before I received this gift. I did not clean it off real good before the pictures as he needs it to practice tonight, but it will clean up nicely. I do not home school my children, however we do teach them a lot at home as it is needed to support their teachers at school. Don't worry about my grammar I may have messed up on that is why we have the teachers help teaching our children. :)   I also attend socialization with babies where I am able to plan crafts and learning activities. I will be doing a post about  our next one soon as it is done. I am planning the craft based on a dentist theme as the mobile dentist will be coming.

He had to learn the difference between to, too and two this year s here it is used in a sentence.

It's not too difficult to use them, once you take the time to learn what they mean - and do some practicing too.

He also had to learn the difference between their, there and they're as shown in this sentence.

They're there waiting for their car to be repaired.

meet me monday linkup first live concert and more

I AM JOINING THE MEET ME ON MONDAY LINKUP
THIS WEEKS QUESTIONS GO WELL WITH THE QUESTION THAT WE ARE ANSWERING THIS WEEK FOR THE MOMMY PANEL WHICH IS, WHAT WERE YOU LIKE BEFORE YOU BECAME A PARENT?  I WILL BE POSTING THAT LATER THIS WEEK.

Here are today's Questions:
1. What was the first live concert you ever attended?
2. What colors look best on you?
3. What is one thing about you that most people wouldn't know?
4. Who would you call to be bailed out of jail?
5. What do you think is the greatest invention of your lifetime and why?

My Answers :
1. What was the first live concert you ever attended?
Does a back yard jam session count. Sitting around the campfire singing Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline, and Randy Travis along to a friend playing the guitar.    How about sitting in a junk car in the junk yard listening to the radio, singing Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve miller band, Queen, Motley Crue, Poison  sneaking cigarettes  and drinking Boone's farm with a bunch of friends? This does not really go with my Mommy page I have here in blog land.  I believe my first real concert was Jimmy Buffet.

2. What colors look best on you?
Browns, tans and blacks blues  neutral colors3. What is one thing about you that most people wouldn't know?
I am not as dumb as you may think I am! 4. Who would you call to be bailed out of jail?
Not my husband he more than likely put me there for a frying pan incident. Ha Ha  he was the one that bought me the Cast Iron GEEZE JK... I would call my husband. 5. What do you think is the greatest invention of your lifetime and why?  I think the world would have gone around better without all the inventions but now that I am hooked on them. I know it is not the smartphone.  It is much harder to call out on them while driving and I think it contributes to the accidents. I could dial my phone without looking but not the smartphone with its touch screen.

MENU PLAN MONDAY FEB 27 SHOPPING LIST

A while back we made a list of all of our favorite meals. Today I spent the afternoon making a menu out of them. It will be faster to pick out items we want to eat when making our weekly menu plan. Today I handed Jim the menu, he looked it and I typed what he chose into out weekly menu. It is much faster this way and I am hoping to make a month’s worth of menus at once so that all I have to do is link them up on Mondays. When I start preparing meals ahead and making freezer meals once a month it will make it even faster to chose a meal as well as faster to cook it when its time.

God makes all kinds Grandma but you were one of a kind!

Last night I wrote a post about something my grandma Told me... God makes all kinds... Today when I woke up someone called to tell me she passed away Tuesday night.
This pic was from 2009
Quite a few years ago even before my divorce was final from my first marriage I was having a hard time with things. Someone suggested that I be matched up with a Foster Grandma. This is a christian organization that matches you with a grandma to mentor you.  I had been matched with one when I was pregnant for Troy but moved and never seen her again. When they matched me up with grandma they made the perfect match. Grandma has been there with me through so much. She was there for me through my divorce, Dating, Child birth, Jobs and wedding. She told me a while ago how proud she was of how much I have changed and it really meant a lot to me. Tomorrow I will be going to her Memorial. You know the person who listens to everything that is going on in you life and guides you in the right direction. That would be her. I know that she is happy in heaven with her husband but I can not help but miss her. She has been here every week for all these years.   She called me on Tuesday and told me that she was not going to make it to see me. GRR.... This post will not do justice to grandma.. I will type another one and tell you about her later...

Simple woman's day book February 24 2012

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... Snow Day No School… It is Friday and that snow has came again. It is amazing to me that in my last 3 daybooks I have written in, snow has arrived on Friday.

I am thinking... I have to make this quick. Being that it is a snow day, the kids are home and we are going to get our laundry caught up. They are asking for a WII chore challenge so I cannot deny them.

I am thankful...  to god for my family, friends and home.

In the kitchen...  Yesterday my husband looked on my blog at our menu plan for the week and found out that we were having chicken Alfredo and cooked it. He pressure cooked the chicken and then grilled it.  It was delicious even though he used chicken helper to make it. This weekend I want to make something using the puree carrots I made from leftover carrots the other night. I am thinking some muffins or something sound yummy.

I am wearing... My daughter’s night shirt and my husband’s ARMY sweat pants. My daughter yelled “Get It off MOM! That is mine.” Okay! Kate, I will take yours off as soon as you take my jacket you have on off.”
I am creating...  This post and then I am off to start working on the house while the kids are in the mood. We have 23 days until the construction begins.

I am going... to have another busy week as I have paper work to get caught up on. I need to stop reading blog posts and getting side tracked on this for awhile so I can get something accomplished.

I am wondering...  if some of my mail went to my neighbors down the street as the mail keeps getting messed up around here. I have a book that should have been here and it never arrived!
L

I am reading...Nothing aside from Blogs. Honestly, my husband asked, “Don’t you have a book review you have to post soon?” I have still not updated the kids book challenge to show the books we have read so far this year.

I am hoping...for a nice weekend with my husband even if we have to stay home. He had a little problem keeping his call in dates straight and so we are waiting on a check. Hope the internet does not get shut off while we are waiting.

I am looking forward to... chicken salad sandwiches my husband is planning on making tomorrow. Yummy, He kept some of the chicken he pressure cooked and is planning on buying walnuts, grapes and croissants to go with it. I love to dip tortilla chips in coleslaw and eat them with it. Anyone have a good coleslaw recipe to share that uses horseradish type flavor?

I am learning that I need to work on making a list of things to do each day and trying to work on accomplishing them. I have been slacking since before my surgery really.

Around the house...well, this one goes with the above one. We have much spring cleaning to do around here. I would love to get to the basement and go through all my books but first we have just gone through kids clothes again and slimmed down on the amount we had.

I am pondering... rather I should cut sierras bangs or not. I try to keep it up and she pulls the pony out.  When I let her have the short bangs it just made it so she had hair in her eyes no matter what. Grandma came last night and gave haircuts again. We were behind for having a MIL who owns a beauty shop. I had her cut a few inches off mine too as it was frizzy on the ends. I am going to get some hot oil treatment I think to try to cut down on the frizz. Frizz is something that seems to go with my curly hair. We cut a lot of hair off Matthew and it is looking cute. The curl did not go away on him either.

A favorite quote for today... Why put off today what you can do tomorrow. Lol, that one is funny.

One of my favorite things...  is when my kids get along on a snow day… you know that is a joke right!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Look at the plans for the week from last week and get caught up on them.

A peek into my day... after bath last night ready to cuddle. When i get time I am going to add  the pictures of the other kids hair cuts as well.

The church lady, the crazy lady you know the one…god makes all kinds

Years ago I sat in my living room visiting with Grandma when I saw someone walk by.  “Ugh! I can’t stand her I said. You know grandma one time that girl...”  “Shh” Grandma interrupted “God makes all kinds doesn’t he!”  Yeah! Grandma I guess you are right.” I said

Every town I have lived in we have had a crazy lady, a church lady, a mean old man, etc etc. You know the one who everyone talks about and has a different story for how they became what they are. When the kids go by their house they go as fast as they can, looking back at the house every step of the way. When the neighborhood kids become teenagers that is the first house to be egged or toilet papered.
In Grant 2 houses down from where I grew up we had a lady that lived down the road with her mother. She began making a tomb for her after she passed.  I remember the big hole she had dug and filled the sides with bricks when they caught her and made her give her mom a proper burial.  Mom explained that she was just really sad that her mom died and did not want to let go of her.
We had a man who lived in our town that wore a helmet everywhere and rode on a bicycle. Everyone called him Crash. I still to this day do not know his name.  He later got a truck and added a topper to it that he made out of plywood.  He added a real topper to the top of it drove it around and supposedly lived in it later. I remember going to his house type shack to take a T.V. for him to repair for us. My parents had pictures of him playing in his band in their wedding so he had to be somewhat sane at some point.  He stopped by to visit once in a while to our house and was a little off the wall. I would stare at him like he was an alien while peeking from behind my parents. When he looked at me I would step back behind them. I finally got the guts to ask him to take his helmet off once while in our drive way Out of a dare I think and he had grey shoulder length hair with big thick curls.  It was more of silver really and not that dirty.  I Do remember him wearing a polyester brown suit for most of the time I seen him.  It was more the color burnt sienna from a color crayon.  At some point He stopped by wearing a new Polyester baby blue suit and he had turned his helmet in for a cowboy hat. I heard a rumor that a lady who I began seeing around town was his wife but that was after I left the neighborhood so I never knew.  Years later which seems not so long ago someone said that he was found dead in a snow bank at his house  on the corner he had moved to with that woman. That woman was much like him and I am sure someone has a story about her like this one.

Then there is a woman that went around town putting little book marks in bibles and books everywhere in town.  She is still around spreading the word. She will stop you at any given point and try to make you pray with her to ask Jesus into your heart.  I have found myself on a sidewalk in front of a business on a few occasions saying her prayer with her.  Even though I tell her I have done it before she wants me to do it again. People stare at her and ridicule her.  They laugh at her.  I stopped to get balloons, candy and flowers to take to Megan’s school for her birthday a few weeks ago.  I have to admit that I felt somewhat uncomfortable standing in front of family dollar praying the prayer out loud with her. She caught me on the way in and I said hello to her and exchanged address’s. You see she used to baby sit me when I was very little. I think I was only 3 or 4.  Yes, I have memories that go back that far.
I loved going to her house as she would play records with bible stories on them.  She taught me bible verses and took me to church.  The last time my parents  took me to be babysat she was upset with them for drinking as she did not think it was Christian for them to drink. My mom told her she would not be having her babysit if she could not mind her own business and that was the end of it.

So as I went inside the store and went about my shopping Betty continued speaking to me catching up and reading me verses. She gave me book marks for all the kids and even followed me when I checked out. She said” I used to baby sit missy when she was little” The cashiers gave her and I a funny look like they felt sorry for me with her bugging me as if she could not tell. She said “I’m sorry I did not mean to embarrass you.” I said “Oh I am fine I have 8 kids remember I get to embarrass them in the store”  “Yeah that’s right you do” she said and smiled.   I said “good bye nice seeing you, I have to get this to Meg before the day is over.”   I went on my way.

I sometimes wonder what the real story was with “crash and the crazy lady.”  They were different than most but they were human. Like Grandma said “God makes all kinds!” The thing is when the crazy lady moved out of that house I remember visiting her down the road and it seemed like she was a nice lady. When I heard that Crash had been found dead in a snow bank I felt very bad for him. I don’t know how long he laid there or any details but had heard something about him freezing. He was a human being like everyone else and he was made by god and I do not wish that on anyone.  How awful to freeze to death if that was the truth.
There is one last thing.  Betty Davis is her name. You still see her around town.  When I was reading the new testament for church (which we are behind on by the way) something reminded me of her. It was Matthew 5: 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. “Betty Davis no matter what they say about you and even if I feel awkward at times on the sidewalks. I appreciate you!  People do need god rather they want to believe it or not. Thank you, for taking the time all those years ago to plant a seed.”

LUKE 8:11 NKJ
11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Matthew 5:

1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Take a pic with your phone or save a web page and store it on Clipix

As a blogger, I often find myself asking my family to stop what they are doing so I can take a picture.  Once I bought my new Smartphone I started to use it to take pictures. The quality was better than my digital camera and there are so many ways to send it to my  accounts online. This week I Discovered Clipix.  I plan to use this to take pictures with my phone and add them to a board where I can later use it on my blog or share it.

It was very simple and free to open an account. Just log into clipix and choose how you want to sign up. You can use your  Facebook or Twitter account or sign up using your email address. I chose to use Twitter which was very fast. I followed the prompts and my account was open within seconds. Once your account is open, you then drag the "Clip Button" to your bookmarks bar where you can click on it whenever you want to save something from a web page. This video will explain more:

Upon signing in you will see  they have already set up boards for you that you can begin adding clips to. By all means if you don't feel you would use boards with the names they have made rename it like I did. You can add boards for other subjects, share boards with friends, add more boards, or  email, tweet or share it on face book with the button on the bottom.  Synchronize a board  so that your friends see the things you pin in real time and add it to their own clips.  Aside from the phone application my favorite part was that  I can choose to share with only me,  only clipix friends or everyone by clicking on the  lock button. Privacy can be important when sharing certain items.

Here is a screen shot of my multiboard. An awesome feature of this is that I was able to create a board called "holiday crafts food" that is a multiboard. It  has another clipboard inside of it for each holiday. Looking at my clipboards in the screen shot they look pretty empty as I just opened up this account. This multi board feature is another of my favorites. I plan on having a  mulitboard labeled "house" and making a board for each room for decorating ideas to go on inside of the multi board.

As of today they have an app for IPhones to go with it that you can snap a picture and add it to your online boards. They are in the works of creating the app for Android. In the mean time, I have set up my account so I can organize and name my boards and add some webpages to them. Anytime I find something I want to save all I have to  do is clip it and this little box pops up to let me choose what board I want it to go to. Later on when I want to get back to a webpage I can open the clip I saved and click on "View at source." It will go back to the page I found it on. I can not wait to get the app for my Android when it is released. Here is a screen shot of where I added a tab to my Facebook page for Clipix. This is pretty neat as I can share all of my clips with my Facebook fans.

Mommy Panel Things you can not leave the hospital without when having a baby!

                                   The mommy panel
Click the link to visit the list of moms who are participating and see their answers.

This week’s question is
What could you not leave the hospital without?
My baby! I would not leave that hospital without the doctor getting that baby out no matter what. “I don't care if I am not even dilated I am so tired of being pregnant. Doc just please let me have it!!"   Okay serious side of things now. I always made sure I had a diaper bag that was packed for me and the baby. I had to have a new outfit, hair tie, shampoo conditioner and razors in my bag. (You know you want to shave after not being able to reach for those entire last weeks.)  I wanted to be sure that I was prepared for my return home with a comfy spot set up to lay in. It had to have access to everything I needed for baby right by my side. I hung a shelf on the wall next to my bed that was temporary with diapers, blue nose sucker, Kleenex, wipes, lotions, diaper pail, and items that were recommended for the baby for circumcision or umbilical cord. That along with a bassinet near my bed and I was all set to come home.

All things were created by him. Something to think about!

Something to think about that I tell my kids:

"God is watching you even when no one else is. You know he can see rather your house is clean or not all the time. So If God stopped by for coffee would your house be clean? Well he is here now and he can see it so clean it for him. All things are created by earth in one way or another which was created by him. All beings were created by him. They are his, not yours so take care of them you never know when they will be gone."

Okay So I am reading this and thinking. "Mom get up off your butt and that blog and clean your room"  "Practice what you preach."   "I'm Going I'm Going"

Menu Monday Fat Tuesday

Menu plan Monday

Kate and Mrs Kuiper a few years ago after  their fishing trip.
Emergency meals:  1: canned soup and grilled cheese    2: Canned ravioli
This week Jim and I have decided we need to be on a diet. I need to look into some meals that are not as starchy as I think all the bread and noodle meals we have are fattening.  I am thinking we need to eat more cereal for breakfast and also that we need to cut out one day a week of meat. We also seem to eat a lot of cheese. Not always in meals but Jim and I eat a lot of chips and cheese for snacks in the week. Although winter has been easy on us we still have not been outside. I almost think if we had more snow we would have been more active. We have not  had to shovel much at all and only needed to plow one time this year. Read My Menu below..

WII chore challenge tourney and no one is perfect.

Two things I want to share today.

This weekend I decided to try something different with the kids to make chore time more fun. We have been working on getting things prepared for construction around here so there has been early spring cleaning going on. Sometimes it feels a lot like all we do is work.  The construction will begin March 19th and that is not that far away. It is set to end by August 31st.  Here is what I came up with.

WII Chore Challenge Tournament

This is set up like a tournament. This is one of the things that I think is easier with a big family but could be done with a smaller family as well.

  1. In order to begin they had to all help straighten up the living room since that is where the WII is I figured that would be a great way to get that cleaned up fast.
  2. All players work while waiting for their turn.
  3. Next to each person’s name on round 1 was their chore for the day. Bathroom, Dining room, kitchen, Dishes, laundry room etc. Whatever chore they have for the day they have to work on it until it is there turn to play in the tournament.  The babies were paired up with an older kid to help. (Rosie (Sierra) likes to help with dishes so I paired her with Megan. Megan is on dish duty this week because of bad behavior) if they get done with the chore they can sit on the couch and watch the others play.
  4. Round 1 If you lose your round you owe one basket of clothes to be put away.
  5. Round 2  If you lose your round you owe one basket of clothing to be put away.
  6. Round 3 all who lost the rounds set the table together.
  7. All that lost the tournament will help clear the table and the winner of the tournament will get 30 minutes of computer or WII time.
  8. As a Special bonus who all compliant participants will get a can of orange soda for a treat after clothes are ready for church for tomorrow.

Guess what you’re not the only one that is not perfect? Today while at church I was talking to some other ladies who were talking about kids not getting their clothing ready till the last minute. You know when they say at 9 at night that they need jeans washed for the morning? I always feel like I am the only one that has this happens with her kids. But Guess what kids will be kids.  Sometimes I feel like I have to be a better parent and things only happen to me. It helps to hear that somethings we are hard on our family for are things that are normal to others as well.

I have had certain bible verses that I have always liked and this is one and fits. No one is perfect

Romans 3:10  New International Version (©1984)
As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one

Thanks for your prayers. My surgery and Test results...

So last week as many of you know I had surgery for a lymph node that was swollen. I had began getting sick really way back in the summer and had been through 3 courses of various Antibiotics to try to clear up what ever it was that was making me sick. I went through many times where I felt like I was poisoned. I had dizzy spells, fevers and any cold that was going around or flu I got. Even though I had my flu shot I still got the flu. I was given a CBC along with a few other test that all came back fine except for a high white blood count on one test. (any little sickness can make your white cells high) I was then given a  ultrasound of the lymph node and found out there were 3 and not just one while at the Cancer Center.  I was given every blood test that you could imagine at the Cancer Center and in the mean time he sent me to a Dr to get a biopsy done. (all this time I was on 2000 MG of antibiotics as another doc thought I may have an infection in my abdomen  as it was painful above the pain from my possible adhesion's)   Adhesion's are scar tissue from my C sections that I had. One in 2009 and one in 2010  We do not know for sure that I have them until he does a surgery to look around.. Anyways... So rather those last round of antibiotics cleared this up or it is the removal of the largest lymph node I feel 100% better. As in I no longer feel poisoned. All the last round of tests came back good and now all I have to worry about is this pain from my scarring from the c section. There are a few options. a surgery to look around and see if there are adhesion's, Clean up the scar tissue or if no adhesion's maybe just physical therapy for my muscles and back to get rid of this pain. I am just grateful that there is not any cancer or any of the other things they were checking me for.   Thanks to everyone who was praying for me.  It really meant a lot to me. The church we started attending Fremont Wesleyan was very nice to pray for me and call to check on me. I even had a person that works with Mom Central send me an email and wish me well when she was looking at my blog for acceptance into their blog program.  (a consulting company I have become affiliated if that is the proper wording)  My mom told me that her church in Wisconsin had me on the prayer list after I told her my results she had to stop by her pastors. Then there were some of the ladies from Simple Woman's Day book who were praying for me as well as my friends that I only talk to on Facebook. I really thought it was neat that I had people that were praying for me all across the WORLD...  I was going to say country but realized some were from other countries. How Awesome of a feeling. Call me strange but it put a smile on my face and I do believe in the power of prayer. Sometimes in this life I have had times where I knew that God was the only one that could help me... Okay Ramble Ramble trying to get that all out before my pain med I took makes me tired. Someday I will tell you  a story about my daughter Sierra  spina bifida Myelomeningocele and the power of prayer...
